Simulation fidelity in dynamic simulation, #simsci

As mentioned last time, DYNSIM is a first principles, high fidelity simulator. But what does it means to have these characteristics?

Simulation fidelity is often categorized into High, Medium and Low. The name implies the level of faithfulness to a plant process, but also insinuates simulation complexity.  However, there is no set metric that clearly differentiates one level from the next. In fact, the flow sheets in a simulation may consist of varying levels of fidelity depending on their overall importance and impact in the simulation.

An FAQ on the CrudeSuite-PRO/II integration

One of the common questions I have gotten about the Spiral CrudeSuite-PRO/II integration is that if you get a PRO/II file that has an integrated stream from CrudeSuite in it, but you do not have CrudeSuite, will you be able to use that file?








Quite Simply, the answer is yes – with some limitations. When you open a PRO/II file with a CrudeSuite stream in it, PRO/II will display a message that you do not have CrudeSuite and will be able to change crude selection or % blend.  However, you can use PRO/II with the stream defined as is.  You can even change total flowrate, temperature and pressure. You just can not change the composition.

Explanation of first principle dynamic simulation. #SimSci

DYNSIM is a first principles, high fidelity simulator. But what does it means to have these characteristics?

Mathematical models that are as close to decoding the underlying natural phenomena as possible are known as first principles or ab inito. While the formulae may utilize empirical data in first being created, a rigorous formula is applicable to many situations beyond the initial testing environment because it describes the physical interactions. When it comes to simulators, the classification of first principles assures that when the user inputs a value into the simulator, that value is conserved, whether it represents mass, heat, work, chemical or other energy states as it moves through the process.

However, while first principle simulators are as accurate as they come, they can also become overly complex and utilize extensive computing time. In the case of a flowing liquid for example, a first principles simulator could model each individual water molecule and the properties that contribute to the friction and pressure drop as they flow through a pipe. Performing computations of this detail on the molecular level is not generally reasonable or required. Equations that provide nearly equivalent bulk response at a fraction of the computing power may be substituted.


For this reason, first principle simulators are often described by varying levels of fidelity. Come back tomorrow to learn what you can expect from the different fidelities of process simulation software.

Patch 2 for PRO/II 9.2 is now available.

I am pleased to announce the completion of PRO/II 9.2.2.

PRO/II 9.2.2 is a patch release which resolves some important customer-found defects. The release addresses a total of manydefects markedly improving the product’s quality for our customers.

Seventeen years ago I started my career right out of college at a small, (and definitely) understated company called Simulation Sciences, in the heart of Orange County. Now I’m back, and how things have changed! The company, and its impact on the industries it serves, has exploded. More than 35 product offerings, 750 client companies in 70 countries, and millions of dollars of savings for these customers.
My background is in chemical engineering and process simulation. In my 17-year career, I have assisted clients in modeling new and existing technologies, troubleshooting processes, and optimizing operating conditions through technical and economic studies. I perpetually look for new opportunities where improvements can be made, solutions can be developed, and/or collaboration can be optimized to address growing customer needs. Product Marketing allows me to demonstrate directly to customers the value SimSci provides by addressing these market problems.
So why come back to SimSci? Better yet, why not. Wouldn’t you want to be part of an exciting work environment—challenging, yet extremely rewarding? I have the unique opportunity to represent and equip customers with the best tools available to the hydroprocessing, chemicals, and power industries; providing our customers value they only dream of.

So where to start first? I’m going to jump back into the products that have made SimSci so successful; to see what’s new. Preconfigured Radial Plots in SimSci APC 2014, #SimSci

Radial plots are not new to APC engineers. They are used to see where the current operating point is in the live process in relation to all constraints. Radial plots aid in the operation of the process.

What is new is that SimSci APC automatically generates these radial plots for you. So you get all the benefits of radial plots but you don’t have to configure them yourself. Now that explains ease-of-use.

Spark Lines in Simsci APC 2014, #simsci

One of the new features of SimSci APC is that we put spark lines throughout the program to enhance usability.

A spark line is a small dynamic icon next to a tag for a control or manipulated variable that depicts the trend of that variable in real-time. Meaning that as the process changes, that little icon changes as well, showing you how that variable is changing with the process.


I am not a control engineer by any stretch of the imagination, but I can see the value of spark lines to the user. They will quickly be able to tell how a variable is reacting, in real time. It was something that our customers asked for as part of the new graphical user interface and I am glad we delivered.

FEBRUARY 10, 2014 /HOUSTON, TEXAS - Invensys, a leading supplier of state-of-the-art industrial software, systems and control equipment to the world’s major industries, has unveiled a new version of its SimSci® advanced process control software. To be released this spring, SimSci APC 2014 will enable customers to shorten their plant testing and commissioning schedules, as well as improve plant operations and personnel performance.

This innovative offering has been built from the ground up to emphasize ease of use. It modernizes the graphical user interface while retaining the rigorous and robust calculation engine from the company’s successful Connoisseur APC offering. The new SimSci APC 2014 software is structured around an enhanced, natural workflow that includes full support for model case file development and a connection wizard for faster integration to any distributed control system and programmable logic controller, including the company’s Foxboro® I/A Series® DCS and its new Foxboro Evo™ process automation system. The software will be even more tightly integrated in future releases of the Foxboro Evo system as well, providing enhanced simulation capability.

Update to SimSci Licensing Options

Dear SimSci Software User,

This letter is to provide an update on the licensing and security options from Flexera Software, who produces the security software that SimSci software products use for LAN, WAN, and Token Licensing. Flexera Software has stopped supporting FLEXlm 9.5 – which is currently widely used among SimSci customers.

In an effort to support our customers going forward, the SimSci team is implementing the following plan:
  • Existing FLEXlm 9.5 security licenses will be upgraded the next time they are renewed. However, we do recommend that you upgrade as soon as possible to avoid any potential problems. 
  • Older FLEXlm 9.5 licenses will continue to work until they are renewed. However, if they stop working before the renewal period, they will need to be upgraded to FLEXlm 11.11.
  • A retrofit utility is currently available on the ESD site that will upgrade older versions of installed SimSci software to the appropriate FLEXlm 11.11 licensing.
  • All future installations of SimSci software will only allow FLEXlm 11.11, TOKEN 11.11, and USB security options.
We appreciate your patience through the migration and will do our best to minimize the impact on your use of our products. Please contact technical support if there are any problems.
